Drawing my nephew, Jake

This #ThrowbackThursday is for that time Samsung hired me during the launch of the Galaxy Note, their larger/”more to love” tablet phone that had enough pressure sensitivity to do really great drawings. During the project I basically had to draw as many portraits as I could over 11hour days. Meanwhile people talked to you about the phone and made you a free tshirt of my drawing. Ideally, management were shooting for about 6min a portrait, but as I’m not a caricaturist (they are kinda mean, aren’t they?) I tried for something a bit more personal and more something I would like to see in a portrait. People are fascinating and if they are willing to sit for a portrait, give them some art they can be proud of.

It ended up one of the hardest art challenges I ever did. I’d never been a fast illustrator but  by the end of the few weeks, I was actually hitting sub 6min times. Not to mention my arms were dead every night from marathons of drawing. I’m really proud of the over 450 portraits I did during that launch. Weirdly, despite all the difficulties, demands, and deadlines, it was a project I remember fondly. It was certainly an adventure, and paid ‘life drawing’ is a pretty sweet deal really. At a time, I was 200lbs and feeling terrible about my art, this was the start of things turning the corner. I got a lot of confidence in my drawing ability and rekindled my love of faces. What it came down to, I got to draw and create every day while meeting bizarre and interesting people, stuff I had taken for granted. Each one of these portraits has its own typically hilarious story attached. I recommend asking me about some of them someday if you are in the mood for some tales of madness and embarrassment.
